This term, Year 2 pupils have been investigating and learning all about life cycles. From how a teeny, tiny caterpillar can grow into a beautiful butterfly, to the different ways in which baby animals are born, as well as making comparisons between different life cycles and identifying the similarities. The children have also focussed on the differences between reptiles, mammals and birds.
On a bright, sunshine filled afternoon, pupils went down to the farm to discover more about life cycles with Mr Thurston. The lesson began with everyone sitting on hay bales and listening to Mr Thurston talk about the life cycle of a chick and their development in eggs. Pupils also learnt about the differences between the eggs being laid by the school chickens, compared to the ones bought in the supermarket. Some pupils were even tasked with finding an egg in the chicken coop – much to their delight.
It was then time to embark on the next adventure with pupils visiting the goats, alpacas and goats, listening intently about the differences in their young, how long the babies take to grow and even getting the chance to meet the animals face to face.
Our onsite farm is a fantastic resource which really complements the teaching of topics such as this. It also provides plenty of opportunities for our pupils to gain hands-on experience with animals and build their resilience and confidence.
