Year 4 have started a new Humanities topic this term, ‘Rivers’. They have been talking about the fact that the water in rivers is flowing and thinking about the impact this has on the contents of the river.
To illustrate the point, the pupils mixed sand, soil and stones together, poured them into a bottle (recycled of course!), added water and gave the contents a jolly good shake.
They then discussed what they observed regarding the clarity of the water before and after shaking, the order in which the different substances settled, and the ways that this mirrored the workings of real rivers.
